Yocto Hello World Recipe Collection

Simple Yocto recipes for comparing languages, build systems, dependencies, and packaging patterns.

The meta-hello-worlds project is a collection of simple, practical Yocto recipes demonstrating how to build and package software using different programming languages and build systems.

The project provides a set of small, self-contained examples covering common tasks when integrating software into a Yocto Project build. Each example deliberately keeps the application simple so that the focus remains on the BitBake recipe and the build process.

Features

Examples for C, C++, Python, Rust, Go, Java and shell scripts.

Recipes using Make, CMake, Meson and Autotools build flows.

Remote Git source fetching, pinned revisions and local patch application.

Shared library packaging, headers, pkg-config metadata and recipe dependencies.

Installation examples for applications, configuration files and systemd services.

Optional build behaviour controlled through PACKAGECONFIG.

Packagegroup and image examples for collecting recipes into a target image.

Small examples suitable for Yocto training and as references for new recipes.

Getting started

The repository contains the Yocto layer in the meta-hello-worlds subdirectory. Add that layer to an existing build environment, then build an individual recipe.

git clone https://github.com/ming4real/meta-hello-worlds.git

bitbake-layers add-layer \
  /path/to/meta-hello-worlds/meta-hello-worlds

bitbake hello-c
